Printing from Nature

In this lesson we asked students to create relief prints using acrylic paint and materials we foraged outside.

Essential Questions:

  • In what ways can artists represent nature through prints?

  • In what ways can we use non-traditional materials in our prints?

Standards:

  • VA:Cr2.1.3- Create artwork using a variety of artistic processes and materials.

  • VA:Cr2.3.3- Individually or collaboratively construct representations, diagrams, or maps of places that are part of everyday life

Linked Assessment Outcomes:

  • Students will choose items from nature which have 3D elements that will show up in a print

  • Students will select printing colors to correspond with each gathered item from nature

  • Students will experiment with various items and techniques when printing

  • Students will compare various versions of their prints

  • Students will evaluate whether or not their prints successfully transferred

Reflection:

I was pleased to see how the students selected their items from the front of the school with care, thinking about what kind of impressions they would make with little guidance. When some of the objects weren’t making an impression in the traditional relief style, some students moved to use the object as a tool to make marks on the page as can be seen by some of the swirls in the images above. Students were able to think outside of the parameters of the project and persevere to create something they were proud of.
